A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, not just for the individual but for their loved ones as well. Accessing the right support at the right time can make a world of difference. That’s where the Primary Care Cancer Champions come in—an initiative ensuring that people affected by cancer can find guidance and information within their local doctor’s surgery.
The Beginning of this Important Role
This initiative was created by the Macmillan Information Outreach Project out of a clear need: people with lived experience of cancer often struggle to find accessible, reliable support. The idea was simple yet powerful—train enthusiastic people already working in GP surgeries to provide cancer-related information, emotional support, and signposting to local resources. By embedding Cancer Champions within primary care settings, the scheme ensures that no one has to navigate their cancer journey alone.
“The Primary Care Cancer Champion was super sweet, understanding and made me feel at ease straight away. She gave me advice, but more than anything she validated my feelings.”
How It Works
The Primary Care Cancer Champions are available in participating GP surgeries across Northamptonshire. They offer:
✅ Information booklets and signposting to local support groups
✅ Face-to-face or phone support for those affected by cancer
✅ A listening ear
Since its launch in July 2024, the project has seen remarkable growth. Over 60% of GP surgeries in Northamptonshire now have a Primary Care Cancer Champion, with a bold goal of reaching 100% by July 2025.
Expanding to Pharmacies: Reaching More People
Recognising that many people living with cancer visit pharmacies more often than doctors, the initiative expanded in February 2025 to include pharmacies as well. This move ensures even more individuals can access the information they need in familiar, accessible spaces.
